811 WASTE REDUCTION 8/5/2014
811.1 Purpose
The intent of this policy is to provide guidelines and procedures to reduce the generation of waste and increase recycling.
811.2 Applicability
This policy applies to all City personnel. Recycle bins are located within each City-owned facility.
811.3 Waste Reduction Procedures
- 811.3.1 Paper Use Reduction
Set black & white printers, copiers, and fax machines to duplex mode as the default setting wherever the equipment capability exists.
Print to copiers, printers and fax machines with duplex capability where networks and capability exists.
Use electronic mail and voice mail when appropriate to avoid using paper.
Use reusable interoffice envelopes to transmit mail in lieu of non-reusable envelopes
Use recycled-content paper in copiers and printers to the extent possible.
- 811.3.2 Energy Use Reduction
Use energy saving settings for electronics including computers, copiers and lights where equipment capability exists.
811.4 Reuse
Reuse products such as file folders, dividers, binders, report covers, storage boxes, office supplies, and furnishings.
Utilize durable goods, such as plates, mugs, silverware, etc. to the extent possible instead of purchasing disposable goods.
Share occasional use items and equipment, including paper shredders, threehole punches and laminators.
Use rechargeable batteries and/or battery testing equipment to extend possible.
811.5 Recycling
811.5.1 Recycling Collection. All City personnel are responsible for separating identified recyclable materials and placing them in appropriate recycling containers.
Common recyclable materials include but are not limited to paper, aluminum cans, plastics (food-grade #1-7, minus Styrofoam), and cardboard. These materials will be collected and placed in designated outdoor recycling bins for the City's contracted hauler to remove.
Other recyclable materials, such as printer cartridges, rechargeable batteries, cell phones, keys, and other unusual materials will be deposited in designated areas on a permanent and/or periodic basis for the Environmental Programs Manager to collect and recycle.
Participate in the City's annual Clean Your Files Day, offered in November each year, to recycle any unnecessary materials.
