Purpose

Internet use is provided for the employees to conduct City-related business.   Internet sites contain a variety of information and may be harmful to computing resources at the City, therefore measures will be taken to maintain secure internet use.


Policy

  1. The City of Lee's Summit provides Internet Access for general business purposes.  City provided internet connection(s) managed by  ITS  are the only authorized methods to connect to the Internet via the City network, unless such alternative access has been specifically approved by the Department Director and ITS.   2. Internet Access includes but is not limited to World Wide  Web  services (www), News Services (list servers, RSS  feeds), Telnet Services and other information accessed via the City's internet connection. (406.7.2)
  3. The City and City's Internet Services Provider(s) have no control over, and therefore, cannot be responsible for the content of the information available on the Internet. (405.7.3)
  4. Users must evaluate and bear the responsibility of validating the subject matter, accuracy, completeness or usefulness of any content available on or through the City Internet connection.   (406.7.4)
  5. Users shall not use the City Internet to access obscene, objectionable or otherwise improper material.   The City reserves the right to block access from the City network to inappropriate sites.   The City recognizes that users may connect accidentally to an inappropriate site.   In this event, the user should immediately disconnect from the site and notify their supervisor. (406.7.5)
  6. The City reserves the right to monitor internet use. (406.7.5) See Monitoring and Reporting.
  7. Users should be aware that the Internet is not secure and should take appropriate measures when transmitting information.   (407.7.6) See Confidentiality and Privacy and Electronic Mail.
  8. Employees may not use the internet to download information/data which is in violation of any related policies. (*406.7.8) Appropriate Use of Computing Resources
  9. Certain sites and programs have inherent risks in operations and therefore, the City will block these sites from being accessed and programs from being executed via the Internet.   Users with a specific business need for these services should coordinate these needs via ITS. (*406.7.9)
