304 BEREAVEMENT LEAVE

304.1 Bereavement Leave Benefit

An employee will be allowed to be absent from work when a death of a Family Member occurs (see policy 101).

304.2 Term of Leave

A maximum of three (3) working days without loss of pay shall be considered a reasonable length of time for funeral attendance. This time shall be computed from the time of death until 8:00 a.m. of the day following the date of funeral services. If such time is less than the maximum of three (3) working days, pay will be made only for the regular working hours which occur following the time of death and prior to the day following the funeral.

304.3 Additional Leave Time

If additional travel time is necessary three (3) additional consecutive calendar days with pay may be granted following the day of the funeral if authorized and approved by the Department Director. An employee may also be granted an additional two (2) consecutive calendar days without pay following the day of the funeral, if requested, and approved by the Department Director.

304.4 Use of Vacation or Personal Leave

Vacation or personal leave may be used in lieu of bereavement leave without pay.

304.5 Documentation

The employee is required to provide the family member relationship, name of the funeral home, a copy of the obituary notice, or death certificate upon returnfrom bereavement leave.
