201 PAY AND CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM

DEFINITIONS (Effective 03/07/2022)

“Demotion” or “Demote” an employee transfer to new position within a lower pay band or pay range.

“Evening Shift” means a scheduled work shift that starts at or after 3:00 p.m., but before 11:00 p.m.

“Exempt Positions” mean those positions classified by Human Resources as executive, administrative, learned professional or computer employee as defined by the criteria established in FLSA. Exempt positions are classified as salary positions.

“Lateral Transfer” means an employee transfer to another position within the same pay band or pay range.

“Night Shift” means a scheduled work shift that starts at or after 11:00 p.m.

“Non-Exempt Positions” mean any positions not classified as Exempt. Non-Exempt Positions are classified as hourly positions and therefore eligible for comp time and overtime.

“Non-Exempt Shift Positions” mean those positions specifically applicable to Fire Department 24-hour Shift Employees.

“Out-of-Class Work” means a temporary assignment to either (i) work in a position in a Classification with a higher pay band or (ii) perform significant additional duties assigned by the Department Director, with approval of the City Manager, for a minimum of four (4) hours or more per work shift for 5 consecutive work days.

“Promotion” or “Promote” means an employee transfer to a different position within a higher pay band or pay range.

“Regular Rate of Pay” means the same as the term is defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act and its accompanying regulations.

“Shift Differential Pay” means the additional pay a Regular Employee receives for working the Evening or Night Shift.

“Special Pay” mean pay in addition to the employee’s regular rate of pay for taking on significant job duties in addition to those set forth in the employee’s job description.

“Work Day” means a normal workday as defined in Section 113.

“Work Schedule” means a normal workweek as defined in Section 113.
