110 NEPOTISM 11-1-09

110.1 Definition

Family member includes the employee's spouse, son, daughter, father, mother, sister, brother, grandchild, grandparent, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, father-in-law, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, step-father, step-mother, step-son, step-daughter, step-brother, step-sister, aunt, uncle, any relationship resulting from a legal adoption, foster child, legal guardianship, and also including any relative residing with the employee.

110.2 Supervision

The employment of family members in situations where an employee would be supervised by his/her family member is prohibited. This policy applies to promotions, demotions, transfers, current employees who marry one another, reinstatements, and new appointments.

110.3 Same Work Area

The employment of family members in the same department or division where they would be in the same place or in regular or frequent contact with another family member is prohibited.

110.4 Grandfather Provision

Family Members in a direct or indirect chain of command as of August 1, 2003, will not be considered a violation of this policy.

110.5 Hiring Process

It shall be the City's policy to not involve employees in the hiring process to consider applicants who are relatives up to the fourth degree of consanguinity.

110.6 Temporary Assignments

This policy does not include temporary assignments that may occur from time to time to meet departmental needs on a temporary basis.
