Overview

Traffic controls and pavement markings are physical elements to assist Right-of-Way users in negotiating a area safely. Traffic controls may consist of any combination of signs, markings, fences, barriers, messages, delineators and other protective measures for the purpose of defining a transportation path. These traffic controls may be temporary or permanent.

Contract documents

Review all contract documents for description of temporary traffic control and pavement marking requirements, including but not limited to the detour routing and signage, lane changes and closures, reduction to travel speeds, etc. during construction activities, including references to standard criteria, (ie: MUTCD - Manual of UniformTraffic Control Devices, etc) and all permanent traffic control and pavement marking requirements to be installed and functional at the project completion.

Submittals

Review the submittal requirements and status of required material submittals for compliance with contract requirements before installation.

Field Observations

Review all temporary traffic controls periodically for appropriate or required establishment and maintenance during the construction period. Review all permanent traffic controls for compliance with contract documents before project acceptance. Traffic signal construction usually follows MoDot plans and specs. Careful attention should be given to the ADA requirements at pedestrian crossings.

Both painted and thermoplastic markings have temperature sensitive specifications during applications. Be familiar with the specifications and have a temperature gun if weather dictates a reason to check. Traffic Control during the striping process is important and should be discussed with the contractor before mobilization on the project site.

If questions should arise, contact the Public Works Traffic Engineering Department. Safety to our citizens is top priority.

Documentation

Record each periodic review of temporary traffic controls, including detour routing, and any comments on establishment or maintenance necessary for contractor correction and document contractor's responses and corrective actions.
