208 SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL (Effective 03/07/2022)

208.1 Application

This policy applies to all Regular Employees except for employees who perform snow removal work subject to the Snow Compensation for Exempt Employees policy. Employees are represented by a bargaining unit that has negotiated a bargaining agreement with separate provisions regarding shift differential pay; in such case, the bargaining agreement shall apply. This policy does not apply to Shift Employees.

208.2 Shift Differential Pay

Regular Employees assigned by their supervisor to work the Evening Shift for five or more consecutive working days shall receive $0.60 per hour in addition to their regular rate of pay. Regular Employees assigned by their supervisor to work the Night Shift for five or more consecutive working days shall receive $0.85 per hour in addition to their regular rate of pay.

If an employee is scheduled during the Evening or Night Shift for less than five consecutive working days at the employee's request, the employee is not considered to be assigned to an Evening or Night Shift for the purposes of this policy and shall not receive Shift Differential Pay.
If an employee receiving Shift Differential Pay is assigned by the employee’s supervisor to work a day shift for less than five consecutive working days, the employee shall continue to receive the Shift Differential Pay for the hours worked during such period.

208.3 Notification of Any Shift Differential Pay

The Department Director or his or her designee is responsible for notifying Human Resources of all employees who are eligible for Shift Differential Pay prior to effective date of the shift. Effective dates shall be only allowed at the beginning of the pay period.

Vacation, sick leave, dependent sick, compensatory time, personal, and worker's compensation leave taken while the employee is receiving the shift differential will be paid based on the employee's regular rate of pay plus the shift differential. Short-term disability and long-term disability will be paid based on the employee's regular rate of pay without the shift differential.

208.5 Overtime Shift Differential Calculation

Shift Differential Pay must be counted as part of an employee's regular rate of pay when calculating overtime pay. Employees whose overtime hours overlap to the next shift will be paid overtime based on the employee's regular rate of pay plus any applicable shift differential for their regularly assigned shift.
